Data Warehouse
A structured, schema-first store optimised for analytical queries. Data is modelled into fact and dimension tables, making it fast to answer business questions. Best suited when your data sources are stable and your reporting patterns are well-defined.
Data Lake
Raw data at any scale, in any format — structured, semi-structured, or unstructured. A lake stores everything as-is and defers schema enforcement to query time. Ideal when you need to preserve full fidelity or don't yet know all the ways you'll use the data.
Medallion Architecture
A layered refinement pattern — Bronze (raw), Silver (clean), Gold (business-ready) — where data progresses through increasing levels of quality. Each layer is immutable and replayable. Widely used in modern data platforms because it separates ingestion from transformation from consumption.
Data Vault
A modelling methodology built for auditability and change. Data Vault separates raw history (Hubs, Links, Satellites) from business logic, making it resilient to source system changes and regulatory requirements. Typically adopted in enterprises where the historical record is non-negotiable.
